In a green leap for Dhaka, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has begun developing what is set to become the country’s largest Miyawaki forest in Diabari, Uttara.

The afforestation project spans approximately 54.63 katha along the east side of Lake 11, adjacent to Bridge 4.

DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ajaz officially inaugurated the project on Wednesday, November 26, marking a milestone in the city’s urban greening initiatives.

Blending traditional Miyawaki techniques with modern environmental design, the forest will host around 14,000 saplings representing approximately 225 species.

These include indigenous fruit, berry, flower, medicinal, timber, ornamental, conifer, shrub, and understory plants, carefully selected to foster biodiversity and a resilient ecosystem.

The design incorporates biomimicry principles and emphasizes the “biophilic” concept – strengthening the connection between people and nature.

Artificial hills have been created to support a natural water drainage system, while a specialised soil mixture of loam, vermicompost, organic fertiliser, bone meal, coco dust, rice husk, and liquid fertiliser ensures optimal growth.

Adding a Japanese touch, the forest integrates the concept of Shinrin Yoku or “forest bathing,” providing a serene space for visitors to benefit physically and mentally. Winding paths, dense green pockets, and lakeside walking facilities have been included to encourage exploration and relaxation.

The DNCC is executing this urban greening initiative in line with green belt areas designated by the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (RAJUK), reflecting a strategic effort to bring nature back into the heart of Dhaka.

Once completed, this Miyawaki forest in Diabari promises not only to enhance the city’s ecological health but also to provide residents with a lush sanctuary amid the urban bustle.
