Purbachal plot case: Hasina sentenced to 5 yrs, Rehana 7 yrs, Tulip 2 yrs

A Dhaka court has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison and her sister Sheikh Rehana to seven years in a case over allegations of corruption in plot allocation in the Purbachal New Town project. British MP Tulip Siddiq, daughter of Sheikh Rehana, was sentenced to two years. Each of them was also fined Tk 100,000.

In addition, 14 other accused received varying prison terms and fines. The verdict was delivered by Judge Robiul Alam of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-4.

After the verdict, Moinul Hasan, the public prosecutor from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) responsible for coordinating the case, told Jago News, “We have been able to prove the allegations against the accused with all the evidence and testimonies.”

The ACC Deputy Director Md Salahuddin filed the case on January 13, 2025, against 15 people, including Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, and Tulip Siddiq. The investigation officer of the case, ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya, submitted a charge sheet against 17 accused on March 10.

On July 31, Judge Robiul Alam of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-4 framed charges against the accused in three cases and ordered the start of the trial. In this case, 32 witnesses have given testimony in court.
