Race against time to save toddler trapped in 35-foot Tanore borehole
A two-year-old boy has fallen into an abandoned deep tube-well borehole in Rajshahi’s Tanore upazila, prompting an intense rescue operation by the fire service.
The incident occurred around 1:30 pm on Wednesday, December 10, in Koelhat village of Panchandar Union.
The child, Md Swadhin, is the son of Rakib, a resident of the same village.
Tanor Police Station OC Shahinuzzaman confirmed the incident, saying that the toddler slipped into the abandoned borehole next to his house.
The deep tube well belongs to a local man named Taher and had reportedly been out of use for a long time.
Fire service personnel rushed to the spot and began rescue work immediately. Officials believe the child is still alive.
A specialised rescue team from Chapainawabganj has also been deployed to assist the Tanor Fire Service team.
The abandoned tube-well borehole is approximately 35 feet deep.
Fire service officials said the boy responded to their calls a short while ago, and rescuers are supplying oxygen into the pipe to ensure he can breathe.
OC Shahinuzzaman said the rescue team will likely have to dig to reach the child.
“It is a very difficult task. Still, fire service personnel and we are trying our best to rescue him alive,” he added.
