The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced that the passports of two suspects in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for the Inqilab Manch and a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, have been blocked.

Meanwhile, three individuals have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident.

The arrested individuals are Sibion Deo,  Sanjay Chisim, and Abdul Hannan.

In a separate operation, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained suspect Md Abdul Hannan and handed him over to Paltan Police Station. A motorcycle used in the attack was also seized.

Police allege that the two men arrested in Sherpur, Sibion Deo and Sanjay Chisim, are members of a gang involved in illegally smuggling people from Bangladesh to India across the border. They were detained on suspicion that they might assist the attacker in fleeing the country.

Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Nazrul Islam shared this information during a press conference at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday, December 14, afternoon.

He stated that on Friday at around 2:25 pm, assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at close range on Sharif Osman Hadi in the Paltan Box Culvert area of the capital, seriously injuring him. Hadi was rescued and admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka, where he remains under treatment.

An investigation was launched immediately after the incident. Following analysis of CCTV footage from the scene, two primary suspects were identified: Faisal Karim Masud and Md Alamgir Sheikh. Their passports have been blocked to prevent them from leaving the country, and alerts have been issued at border areas.

Law enforcement agencies are conducting operations across the capital and other areas to apprehend those involved. As part of these efforts, police arrested the two suspected smugglers in Nalitabari, Sherpur.

Additional Commissioner Nazrul Islam added that operations continue to uncover the full details of the incident and arrest the main perpetrators. He urged the public to share any information with the nearest police station or by calling the national emergency hotline 999.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has also been notified to ensure the suspects do not flee the country.

When asked whether the two suspects visible in the CCTV footage are still in Bangladesh or have fled abroad, Nazrul Islam said there is no information suggesting they have left. He confirmed that Faisal, riding pillion on the motorcycle, fired the shots while Alamgir was driving. The latest police intelligence indicates that Faisal returned to Bangladesh from Thailand in July.

Regarding whether a case has been filed, the DMP official said no case has been registered yet as Hadi's family is occupied at the hospital. Police prefer to file the case themselves rather than have the family do so. If the family cannot come to the station, a prepared draft will be taken to the hospital for their signature.
