Journalist Anis Alamgir has been formally arrested in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station, Dhaka.

The case names four individuals, including Alamgir and actress Meher Afroz Shaon.

Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter on Monday, December 15.

The initial complaint lodged with Uttara West Police Station has been converted into a formal case.

Anis Alamgir, who was already in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB), has been shown arrested in connection with the case. He will be produced before the court through the investigating officer of the police station, Shafiqul said.

Earlier, on Sunday evening, around 7:30 pm, Anis Alamgir was taken from a gym in the Dhanmondi area to the DB office for questioning. Later that night, DB officials confirmed that he was being interrogated in connection with the allegations.

Following the fall of the Awami League government and the subsequent ban on the party’s political activities, Anis Alamgir had appeared on several television talk shows expressing views in support of the Awami League. His comments had drawn criticism from various quarters.
