US issues Bangladesh travel alert over election-violence fears
The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security alert for Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary elections and referendum, citing fears of possible violence.
In the alert issued on Monday, December 15, the embassy said political rallies and protests are likely to increase in the coming days and advised US citizens in Bangladesh to avoid public gatherings and demonstrations.
Referring to the Bangladesh Election Commission’s announcement, the embassy said the national parliamentary elections and referendum are scheduled to be held on February 12. It warned that political activities may become more frequent and intense as the polls draw closer.
The alert noted that even peaceful protests can suddenly turn violent, urging US citizens to exercise maximum caution and stay away from large crowds.
US citizens have also been advised to remain aware of their surroundings, monitor local media regularly and avoid any kind of gathering.
In case of emergency, the embassy urged US citizens to contact the US Embassy in Dhaka or the Consular Affairs Section, and to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updated security information.
