Journalist Shaukat Mahmood sent to jail after remand

Journalist Shaukat Mahmood has been sent to jail after completing a five-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over allegations of involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow the government.

The decision was issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Saturday, December 20, court sources said.

According to the sources, Shaukat Mahmood, former president of the Jatiya Press Club and secretary general of Janata Party Bangladesh, was produced before the court on Friday, December 19, following the end of his remand. 

The investigating officer, Inspector Md Akhtar Morshed of the Detective Branch (DB), Ramna Zonal Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, requested that the accused be placed in judicial custody. 

After a hearing, Magistrate Ariful Islam granted the request and ordered his detention in jail.

Shaukat Mahmood was arrested from the Ramna Model Police Station area on December 8. On December 11, the court approved a five-day remand for interrogation.
