DUCSU leaders lay siege to VC office over renaming of 2 halls

A group of students, including leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), laid siege to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office on Sunday, demanding the renaming of two residential halls of Dhaka University.

They demanded that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall be renamed “Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall” and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall be renamed “Bir Protik Setara Begum Hall.” They also called for administrative action against Dhaka University teachers, officers, and staff who allegedly supported the July genocide.

The protest began around 2:30pm, when DUCSU leaders, hall union leaders, and residential students gathered in front of the university’s administrative building. During the demonstration, protesters chanted various slogans against fascism and what they described as ‘Mujibism’.

Speaking at the programme, DUCSU Social Welfare Secretary A B Zubayer said, “History shows that Mujibur Rahman was an even greater autocrat than Hasina. After Hasina’s fall, no symbols of that autocrat Mujibur will be allowed to remain at Dhaka University. At the same time, teachers, officers, and employees who supported the July genocide must be brought under administrative action.”
