The attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and the English-language daily The Daily Star represent a direct assault on media freedom and freedom of expression, European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller has said, describing the incidents as a "terrifying moment" for Bangladeshi democracy.

Ambassador Miller made these remarks during a visit to the Prothom Alo office on Sunday, December 21, where he expressed solidarity and offered condolences.

He condemned the arson, vandalism, and looting that occurred at the Prothom Alo office late on Thursday, December 18.

Standing outside the damaged building, he surveyed the aftermath and discussed the incident in detail with senior Prothom Alo journalists.

During the visit, Ambassador Miller also enquired about the response of security forces in restoring order.

"I have come here to express solidarity with all the journalists of Prothom Alo following the arson attack on the building last Thursday evening," he said. "The attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star are an attack on media freedom and freedom of expression."

On the upcoming elections, he added: "As Bangladesh approaches an election, it is particularly important to preserve freedom of expression. I hope that such an incident will never recur. This was a terrifying moment for the country's democratic system."

Addressing journalists, Ambassador Miller urged resilience: "You must remain strong at this time and rebuild. For the elections to be conducted peacefully and fairly, journalism must continue, holding everyone to account through reporting."

Present during the discussions were Prothom Alo Managing Editor Anisul Haque, Deputy Editor Lazzat Enab Mohsi, Head of Online Shawkat Hossain, and other staff members, who briefed the ambassador on the events.
