BNP leaves 4 seats for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has reached an electoral understanding with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh (JUI), agreeing not to field candidates in four constituencies.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement at a press conference at the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Tuesday, December 23.
Under the understanding, Jamiat candidates will contest the four constituencies. Maulana Ubaidullah Faruk will contest from Sylhet-5, Maulana Manjurul Islam Afendi from Nilphamari-1, Maulana Junaid Al Habib from Brahmanbaria-2, and Mufti Monir Hossain Qasemi from Narayanganj-4.
Mirza Fakhrul said the BNP would not field party candidates in these constituencies and urged voters to cast their votes for Jamiat candidates under their electoral symbol, the date palm tree.
He warned that party members who ignore the party’s stance and contest independently would face disciplinary action.
Jamiat Amir Obaidullah Faruk said they place their trust in the BNP to govern the country for the welfare of the nation. For this reason, he said, Jamiat has decided to take part in the elections in alliance with the BNP.
