Govt won’t bow to pressure, says Abrar after visiting lynched Dipu’s home
Education Adviser Professor Dr CR Abrar on Tuesday said the government will not bow to any pressure and will ensure a free, fair and inclusive election, warning that vested quarters are attempting to destabilise the country by inciting violence.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after visiting the family of Dipu Chandra Das, who was lynched by a mob on false accusation of ‘blasphemy’ in Tarakanda of Mymensingh.
“Some miscreants are trying to create divisions and incite unrest to derail the election. We must remain vigilant against such attempts, and they will not be allowed to succeed,” Abrar said, adding that the law would take its full course against those involved in violence.
The education adviser assured the bereaved family of full government support and said all those responsible for Dipu’s murder would be brought to justice through due legal process. “The government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen,” he said.
Dipu Chandra Das was killed on the night of December 18 after allegations of blasphemy were raised against him in the Dubaliapara area of Bhaluka.
Tension escalated after the allegation surfaced, while Dipu was inside the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory, where he had been working for the past two years.
As a crowd gathered outside the factory, Dipu was reportedly forced to resign. When he was taken out of the factory around 9:00pm, an angry mob assaulted him, leading to his death on the spot. The mob later hung his body from a tree beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and set it on fire.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Following the incident, Dipu’s younger brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a case with Bhaluka Model Police Station, naming 150 unidentified accused. In subsequent raids, police and RAB arrested 12 suspects. A court later granted a three-day remand for interrogation.
Dipu Chandra Das was the son of Ravi Chandra Das of Mokamia Kanda village in Tarakanda upazila.
