Assailants nearly sever hands, legs of Chapainawabganj man, family accuse Jamaat
In a shocking display of brutality in Chapainawabganj, a 25-year-old man named Abu Sufian Siju was viciously attacked on the evening of December 24, 2025, in Umarpur Ghat within Shyampur Union of Shibganj upazila.
Assailants armed with axes tied him to an electricity pole and hacked at his limbs, nearly severing both hands and legs police and family members said.
The victim and his family have accused activists of Jamaat-Shibir of carrying out the assault.
Abu Sufian was initially taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and later shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka due to his deteriorating condition.
According to Abu Sufian, the attack stemmed from a personal dispute: he had warned a local youth named Mostaq from the Dhobra area for repeatedly harassing a female relative.
That same afternoon, after issuing the warning, Abu Sufian was ambushed while heading home.
He named Anwar, Nurul, and Razzak Huzur as key attackers, alleging that Razzak and several others held him down while Anwar and Nurul repeatedly struck him with a Chinese axe and even beat him with a hammer for hours.
Siju's mother, Sufia Begum, described the ordeal in harrowing detail, saying local Shibir activists captured her son, bound him to the pole, and inflicted devastating injuries under the cover of darkness.
Witnesses in the area watched from a distance but were too afraid to intervene.
The assailants eventually left, assuming Abu Sufian was dead, only for locals to later rescue him in critical condition and rush him to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex. Given the severity of his wounds, he was transferred first to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Police said a case has been filed in connection with the incident.
Chapainawabganj District Additional Superintendent of Police ANM Wasim Firoz confirmed that the victim’s father lodged the case and that two suspects – Shaha Alam and Razzak – have been arrested. “Investigations are underway. At this stage, we cannot confirm any political affiliation of the accused,” he said.
Jamaat leaders have denied any organisational involvement. Shibganj Upazila unit Jamaat Amir Sadiqul Islam described Abu Sufian as a known troublemaker in the area and pointed to a recent local human chain demanding punishment for Abu Sufian himself.
Sadiqul Islam said that those whose names have surfaced in connection with the incident are not activists of any of Jamaat’s affiliated organisations. “But they might be our supporters,” he added.
He also told local journalists that arrested Shah Alam and Abdur Razzak are activists of Jamaat but he insisted they played no role in the attack and suggested the accusations were politically motivated to damage the party's image ahead of upcoming elections.
