The interim government has declared three days of state mourning from Wednesday to Friday following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. In addition, Wednesday (31 December) will be observed as a public holiday across the country.

Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid briefed reporters about the announcement at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

The former Prime Minister passed away around 6:00 am on Tuesday (30 December) while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. She was 80.

The BNP Chairperson had been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital since 23 November. She had long been battling multiple health complications, including diabetes, kidney disease, and heart- and lung-related problems, which had fluctuated over time.
