Resignation lasts 24 hours, Sayedur gets the same assignment

A day after stepping down, Professor Dr Md Sayedur Rahman has been reappointed as Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser with the rank of state minister for the health ministry.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification on Thursday, January 1, appointing him to the post and granting him executive authority over the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the Rules of Business, 1996.

Dr Sayedur had resigned the previous day, Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

A Cabinet Division notification at the time said the President had accepted his resignation.

According to the Ministry of Health, Dr Sayedur Rahman is a professor at Bangladesh Medical University. He went on post-retirement leave on December 30 and resigned from the post of special assistant to complete formalities related to retirement benefits. Following his retirement, he was reappointed to the same position.

The latest order states that he will enjoy the salary, allowances and other facilities of a state minister while serving as special assistant.

Speaking to BBC Bangla, Dr Sayedur Rahman said his resignation was part of the retirement process.

“My service term had ended. I had to complete the retirement procedure. I have now been appointed again to the same post and will carry out the same responsibilities,” he said, seeking prayers and cooperation.

Earlier on Wednesday, he wrote on Facebook that it was the last day of his working life and that his resignation, submitted for release from special state duties on the occasion of retirement, had been accepted.

Professor Sayedur Rahman, a former vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, formerly Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, has been serving as special assistant to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare since November last year.
