Dr Kamal Hossain hospitalised with pneumonia

Dr Kamal Hossain, eminent constitutional expert and emeritus president of Gono Forum, has been admitted to Square Hospital in Dhaka in a critical condition.

Gono Forum confirmed the matter in a press release, stating that the 88-year-old senior lawyer was taken to the hospital on Friday morning due to serious health complications.

According to the press release, doctors have diagnosed Dr Kamal with pneumonia, alongside severe physical weakness and lung-related complications. He is currently receiving treatment at the hospital’s High Dependency Unit (HDU) and is being kept under close medical observation.

Doctors said priority is being given to stabilising his respiratory condition, preventing infection, and restoring his physical strength.

Gono Forum General Secretary Mizanur Rahman said Dr Kamal’s condition remains serious and urged the public to pray for his recovery. 

He last appeared in public on Wednesday while attending the funeral prayers of former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Dr Kamal Hossain, the chief architect of Bangladesh’s 1972 Constitution, is a veteran jurist and politician. 

He served as law minister and later as foreign minister in the country’s first post-independence government led by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Earlier, in September last year, Dr Kamal was hospitalised due to age-related complications and underwent surgery.
