2 killed as truck plunges into Jhenaidah river
At least two people were killed after a goods-laden truck broke through the railing of a bridge and plunged into the Kumar River in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah in the early hours of Sunday, January 4.
The accident occurred around 1:00 am at the Old Borodah Bridge area, after crossing Garaganj Bazar on the Kushtia–Jhenaidah Highway.
The deceased were identified as truck driver Sohel Sheikh, 27, son of Abul Kalam Sheikh, and his assistant Mubarak Hossain, 20, son of Jafar Mia, both residents of Gajamanimunda village in Pabna Sadar upazila.
Arappur Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Mrityunjay Biswas said the truck, carrying a load of lentils, lost control of its steering and fell into the river while traveling from Jashore to Pabna.
On receiving the information, two units of the Fire Service from Shailkupa and Jhenaidah carried out rescue operations. The body of Mubarak Hossain was recovered early Sunday morning, while the body of Sohel Sheikh was recovered around 8:00 am.
Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Masud visited the site after the incident, the OC added, noting that they are looking into the matter.
