A man was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Jashore’s Manirampur upazila on Monday afternoon, triggering panic in the area just two days after a similar killing in the district.

The victim, Rana Pratap, 45, was gunned down in Kapalia Bazar around 5:45 pm. He was the son of Tushar Kanti Bairagi of Arua village in neighbouring Keshabpur upazila.

Police and local sources said Rana Pratap was staying in Kapalia Bazar at the time. Miscreants ambushed him and opened fire, leaving him critically injured. He collapsed on the spot and died from excessive bleeding before locals could come to his aid.

The shooting caused fear and chaos in Kapalia Bazar and nearby areas. Manirampur police rushed to the scene after being alerted and brought the situation under control.

Officer-in-Charge of Manirampur Police Station, Rajiullah Khan, said the body has been recovered and will be sent to the morgue for autopsy. “We are investigating the incident and trying to identify those involved,” he said.

The killing comes amid growing concern over violence in Jashore. On Saturday evening, January 3, unidentified gunmen shot dead Alamgir Hossain, former joint general secretary of BNP’s Ward 7 unit, in the Shankarpur area of Jashore town.
