Rajshahi records season’s lowest 7°C after 3°C drop
Rajshahi has recorded the season’s lowest temperature at 7 degrees Celsius. The temperature was recorded at 6:00am on Tuesday (January 6). As a result, a moderate cold wave is sweeping over the district.
According to the Rajshahi Meteorological Office, the temperature dropped by 3 degrees Celsius within a single day compared to the previous day. Consequently, 7 degrees Celsius has been recorded as the lowest temperature of the current season in Rajshahi. At that time, air humidity stood at 100 per cent, while visibility was reduced to 600 metres due to dense fog. Although foggy conditions persisted throughout the morning, no rainfall was recorded.
The weather office said that on Monday (January 5), the minimum temperature in Rajshahi was 10 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 14.8 degrees Celsius. At that time, air humidity was 76 per cent.
Meanwhile, the intense cold and dense fog have increased the suffering of low-income people, day labourers, and the elderly in the district. Road and river transport have also been partially disrupted due to poor visibility.
Abdul Karim, a rickshaw puller from the Upashahar area of Rajshahi city, said it has been very difficult to go out on the streets since dawn. “My hands and feet go numb. There are fewer passengers, and income is almost nonexistent,” he said.
Rafiqul Islam, a day labourer from the Courtbazar area of the city, echoed similar concerns. He said he is unable to go to work because of the cold. “It’s hard to even leave the house in the morning. Without work, it becomes very difficult to run the family,” he added.
The elderly and children are also suffering due to the severe cold. Shahida Begum, a woman in her sixties seen near Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said she had to go out with her young grandson despite the cold. “My body is shivering. I can’t tolerate the cold,” she said.
Due to dense fog, vehicular movement on roads is being hampered in the early morning hours. From morning onward, vehicles were seen moving on major roads with headlights turned on.
Rahidul Islam, acting officer of the Rajshahi Meteorological Department, said the intensity of the cold may continue for the next few days. He advised people not to go out early in the morning unless necessary.
