Police suspect Uttara house fire originated in kitchen

Police suspect that the massive fire that broke out at a house in Uttara originated in the kitchen.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Ahmed of Uttara West Police Station informed journalists about the incident at his office on Friday (January 16).

He said it is suspected that the fire started in the kitchen, possibly due to a gas connection or an electrical short circuit. The exact cause will be determined later through an investigation by the Fire Service.

The OC added that so far six people have died—three from one family and the remaining three from another family.

The deceased include Fazle Rabbi, 38; Haris, 52; and Rahab, 17, from one family, and three others—Afsana, Rodela Akter, 14, and a two-and-a-half-year-old child, Risan—from another family.

Talha Bin Jasim, acting officer of the Fire Service Media Cell, said the fire broke out at 7:50 am at house number 18, road number 11, sector 11, Uttara. The North Fire Station dispatched two units at 7:54 am, which arrived at 7:58 am and immediately began efforts to control the blaze.

After nearly half an hour of work, the fire was brought under control at 8:25 am and was fully extinguished by around 10:00 am.
