Goons kill RAB officer, take 3 hostages in Chattogram ambush
A tense standoff has unfolded in Chattogram after armed attackers shot dead a RAB officer and reportedly took three others hostage during an operation in Sitakunda’s notorious Jungle Salimpur area on Monday afternoon.
The slain officer, DAD Abdul Motaleb of RAB’s Patenga Battalion, came under fire when a RAB team moved into the remote hilly zone for an operation. He was rescued with critical injuries and taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police and RAB sources confirmed that the attackers also captured three RAB members, sparking a massive deployment of law enforcement in the area.
“We are on the ground. Senior officers are trying to stabilise the situation,” said SI Jafar Ahmed Bhuiyan of Sitakunda Police Station. “Additional forces have been rushed in.”
Jungle Salimpur has long been known as a lawless enclave, packed with thousands of illegal settlements sprawled across occupied government and private land. The isolated terrain has earned a reputation as a stronghold for land grabbers and armed groups, where the presence of outsiders is heavily restricted.
Authorities say the attackers launched a planned ambush on the RAB team, turning the operation into a deadly confrontation.
Law enforcement is working to contain the situation and secure the release of the three personnel who are missing.
