Last day to withdraw candidature today

Today (January 20) is the final day for candidates to withdraw their nominations for the upcoming 13th Parliamentary Election, scheduled to be held on February 12 this year.

According to the Election Commission (EC) schedule, party symbols will be allocated tomorrow, Wednesday (21 January). Candidates can begin full-scale election campaigns from Thursday, 22 January, following the symbol allocation.

Polling is scheduled for 12 February, with voting to be conducted from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm using ballot papers and transparent ballot boxes.

The final list of candidates will be confirmed on Tuesday.

The EC circular states that under Article 16 of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, a duly nominated candidate may withdraw their nomination by submitting a signed written notice either in person or through an authorized representative to the Returning Officer on or before the deadline.

Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam said that the commission is fully independent and not under any external pressure in organising the elections.
