Hadi’s family gets Tk 1cr to buy Dhaka flat

The Finance Division has approved a Tk 1 crore grant for the family of slain Inqilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman bin Hadi to purchase a flat in Dhaka.

The approval was given on Tuesday, January 20, after the Ministry of Housing and Public Works applied to the Ministry of Finance seeking financial assistance for the family.

The finance adviser endorsed the relevant documents, officials said.

According to the proposal, the grant will be used to buy a 1,215-square-foot flat at Doel Tower, a residential building in Lalmatia constructed for government officials.

The flat will be used by Osman Hadi’s wife and children.

Sources at the Finance Division said the grant was approved on the condition that the identities of Osman Hadi’s wife and children are formally verified.

Osman Hadi had announced his candidacy as an independent from the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.

On December 12, a day after the election and referendum schedule was announced, he was shot in the Box Culvert Road area under Paltan Model Police Station in the capital.

He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he underwent surgery, and was later shifted to Evercare Hospital.

On December 15, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for advanced treatment.

He died on December 18 at around 9:30 pm while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital.

Police have said that the main accused in the murder case, former Chhatra League leader Faisal Karim, has fled to India.

Following Osman Hadi’s death, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus said in a televised address to the nation that the state would take responsibility for his wife and children.

A one-day state mourning was also observed in his honour.

Earlier, on January 15, the interim government appointed Osman Hadi’s brother, Omar bin Hadi, as second secretary at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Birmingham, UK, on a three-year contractual basis.
