Ex-DMP chief Habibur, 2 other cops sentenced to death
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has sentenced former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman and two other former police officials to death for crimes against humanity during the July mass uprising, in which six people, including Anas, were killed in Chankharpul, Dhaka.
The other two convicted are former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former Additional Deputy Commissioner (Ramna zone) Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam.
A three-member judicial panel of ICT-1, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the verdict on Monday. The other members of the tribunal are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury. This is the second verdict in a case related to crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
The tribunal also sentenced former Assistant Commissioner of the Ramna zone, Mohammad Imrul, to six years in prison, while three other officials received three-year prison terms each. Former Shahbagh police station Inspector (Operations) Md Arshad Hossain was handed a four-year prison sentence.
The investigation report in the Chankharpul case was submitted on April 21, 2025, marking the first report submitted before the reconstituted tribunal. On May 25 of the same year, the prosecution filed formal charges, which the tribunal took cognisance of on the same day. Charges against the eight accused were formally framed on July 14 last year.
