US won't take sides in Bangladesh's elections: Ambassador

US Ambassador to Dhaka Brent T Christensen has reaffirmed that US will not take sides in Bangladesh’s upcoming 13th parliamentary elections.

He made the remarks following a meeting at the Election Commission (EC) office with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on Wednesday, January 28.

Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed also attended the discussion.

Brent Christensen emphasised that the election outcome is solely the decision of the Bangladeshi people, and the United States is prepared to work with whichever government is elected.

Speaking to reporters, he expressed satisfaction with the preparations undertaken by the interim government and the EC for the polls. He said he has closely followed the electoral process since his confirmation hearing in the US. Senate and is keenly awaiting the election day and its outcome.

He further expressed hope that the election would be conducted in a peaceful and festive atmosphere, enabling citizens to freely exercise their democratic rights. 

When asked additional questions about the national election, the Ambassador declined to comment further, saying “sorry” before leaving.
