Govt decides to open new diplomatic mission in Guyana
The interim government has decided to establish a new diplomatic mission in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana. As part of the move, a portion of the manpower approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be deployed promptly. The mission will be headed by a First Secretary or a Counsellor.
The decision was approved at a meeting of the Advisory Council on Thursday (29 January) at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, presided over by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus.
Later, at a briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared details of the decision.
He said Guyana is currently one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, with extensive oil and gas exploration activities underway. The country recorded a GDP growth of 50 per cent last year.
According to the Press Secretary, the new mission aims to create rapid employment opportunities for skilled Bangladeshi workers, particularly doctors, agricultural workers, and other professionals.
He also noted that Guyana’s vast agricultural land, used mainly for rice and sugar cultivation, offers significant potential for Bangladeshi investment through land leases. The government views this initiative as one of the largest international business and employment opportunities for Bangladesh.
During the Advisory Council meeting, the importance of swift decision-making and the potential benefits of establishing the new mission were emphasised.
