5 killed as dump truck crushes van in Naogaon

At least five indigenous farmers were killed when a battery-run van was struck by a dump truck in Shibpur Patkathi area under Mahadevpur upazila in Naogaon early Saturday, January 31.

The accident took place on the Mahadevpur-Patmitola regional road at around 4:30 am.

The deceased were identified as Biren Pahan, 35, Uzzal Pahan, 38, Bipul Pahan, 25, Sanju Urao, 45, and Biplob Pahan, 22. All are the residents of Nurpur area in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Mohadevpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Monowarul Islam said that a dump truck, coming from the opposite direction, struck the van carrying the indigenous farmers, leaving four of them died and a farmer critically injured on the spot.

The injured farmer was rescued by locals and taken to Mohadevpur Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors referred him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) as his heath condition deteriorated.

He, however, succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital, the police official added.

Dr Imrul Kayes, RMO of Mohadevpur Upazila Health Complex, said that four of the farmers were brought dead to the hospital.
