Workers at Chittagong Port have launched an indefinite strike to protest the government’s decision to lease the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to a foreign company, while also pressing four other demands.

The strike began on Sunday (February 8) at 8:00 am, disrupting all port operations. However, as the morning progressed, some workers started entering the port.

Speaking to reporters near Gate No. 4, several berth operator workers said, “We want to work, but we cannot do so under obstruction. If we do not work, we do not get paid, while those participating in the strike receive wages without working. We are now entering the port to resume our duties.”

Meanwhile, additional law enforcement personnel were deployed in front of the port building from early morning, and a water cannon vehicle was kept on standby to handle any untoward incidents.
