The interim government has imposed strict measures on legally owned firearms to ensure that the 13th national parliamentary election is held freely, fairly, and peacefully. As part of this initiative, 27,995 licensed firearms have been surrendered across the country.

Sources said that 48,283 firearm licenses have been issued in individuals’ names, meaning that 20,288 firearms are yet to be handed in.

In a notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that legal action will be taken against those who violate the order under the relevant sections of the Arms Act 1878.

Earlier, on January 18, the Ministry issued a notification declaring January 31 as the final date for surrendering licensed firearms to respective police stations. Those who fail to comply within the stipulated period will face action under the law. The notification also warned that strict measures would be enforced against violators, and all police superintendents and relevant officials nationwide have been instructed to take the necessary steps to implement the directive.

It is reported that most of the firearms not yet surrendered were licensed during the tenure of the Awami League. Many owners of these firearms have fled abroad, while others remain in hiding within the country.

During a press conference at Police Headquarters on Tuesday, IGP Baharul Alam, when asked about personal firearms looted from police stations, said that any firearm poses a threat. He added that firearms enter the country through various channels and assured that all necessary measures have been taken to tackle the situation.
