Dhaka-Beijing ties free from external influence: Chinese embassy

The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday rejected recent remarks by the United States ambassador over China’s growing influence in South Asia, asserting that relations between China and Bangladesh are independent and not subject to influence from any external power.

In an official statement issued in the evening, the embassy described the US comments as a reiteration of “old rhetoric” and alleged that they were motivated by ulterior purposes. It emphasised that China-Bangladesh relations are not directed at any third party and will not be affected by outside interference.

The response came after US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen recently expressed concern about Beijing’s expanding footprint in South Asia.

He said Washington would continue to engage closely with the Bangladesh government to outline potential risks associated with certain forms of engagement with China.

Reacting to the remarks, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy said Beijing had already clarified its “solemn position” on the matter. The spokesperson accused the US envoy of misrepresenting China-Bangladesh cooperation and portraying the relationship in a simplistic, confrontational framework.

The statement said ties between Dhaka and Beijing are built on mutual respect, equality and shared interests, describing bilateral cooperation as a model of friendly exchange and mutually beneficial partnership.

China also maintained that its engagement with Bangladesh and other South Asian countries contributes positively to regional peace, stability and development.

Reiterating its position, the embassy warned that any attempt to interfere in or undermine China-Bangladesh relations would ultimately fail.
