Dhaka North, South and four other cities get administrators

The government has appointed administrators for six city corporations across the country, including both Dhaka city corporations. The notification was issued on Sunday (22 February) by the Local Government Division. Unlike previous appointments, which primarily involved bureaucrats, this time political figures have been appointed as administrators.

Md Abdus Salam has been appointed as the administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, while Md Shafiqul Islam Khan will serve as the administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation.

Additionally, Nazrul Islam Monju has been appointed for Khulna City Corporation, Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury for Sylhet City Corporation, Md Sakhawat Hossain Khan for Narayanganj City Corporation, and Md Shawkat Hossain Sarkar for Gazipur City Corporation.

According to the notification, the appointments have been made under Section 25 Ka (1) of the ‘Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ and will remain in effect until the corporations are formally constituted, or as full-time administrators of their respective city corporations.

The notification also states that the appointed administrators will exercise the powers and responsibilities of the city corporation mayors in accordance with Section 25 Ka (3) of the same ordinance and will receive allowances as per regulations.
