Crime against humanity: SC overturns life imprisonment of Akram
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has acquitted Khan Akram Hossain, who had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment in a case related to crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
The Appellate Division delivered its verdict on Thursday (February 26), allowing his appeal and overturning the life sentence.
Prosecutor Faruk Ahmad confirmed the matter, stating that Khan Akram’s appeal had been allowed and that he had been acquitted.
Earlier, on Wednesday (February 25), the Appellate Division, led by the Chief Justice, had fixed the date for delivering the verdict. Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam represented the prosecution during the hearing before the court.
Previously, on August 11, 2015, the International Crimes Tribunal had sentenced Khan Akram of Bagerhat to life imprisonment. Following the verdict, he filed an appeal.
The prosecution had brought charges against Khan Akram for crimes against humanity allegedly committed in various areas of Bagerhat in 1971.
