Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has ordered strict legal action against companies responsible for delaying the unloading of imported wheat and maize from lighter vessels, warning that such practices could destabilise the food market.

The directive came during a surprise inspection in the Dhaleshwari River area of Munshiganj on Saturday morning, according to a press release from the Shipping Ministry.

During the visit, the minister found several lighter vessels anchored in the river for 6 to 18 days while carrying food grains. Regulations require such cargo to be unloaded promptly at designated warehouses. However, the concerned companies allegedly failed to comply.

Speaking at the site, Rabiul warned that any attempt to create artificial scarcity or secure excessive profits by deliberately holding food grains on vessels would not be tolerated. “There is an attempt to create artificial scarcity in the market by holding essential commodities on lighter vessels. Those trying to destabilise the market by not unloading goods on time have been directed to face legal action,” he said.

He stressed that such irregularities could disrupt market management and harm consumer interests, particularly at a time when stable supply chains are crucial for price stability.

The minister urged importers, transport operators and traders to strictly follow regulations, ensure the timely unloading of cargo and maintain proper storage to safeguard market stability.

According to the ministry, a task force formed under the Department of Shipping has been conducting regular monitoring drives along river routes. Over the past six weeks, 838 vessels were inspected in the Dhaka, Narayanganj and Jashore regions. If investigations confirm violations, punitive measures will be taken under existing laws.

Rabiul also addressed concerns over transport fares ahead of Eid, issuing a warning that no fare hike would be allowed. Speaking to journalists during a visit to the Narayanganj Terminal, he said operators who violate directives and cause public inconvenience during the holiday season would face strict action.

Expressing optimism about this year’s Eid travel, the minister said authorities have identified potential trouble spots and stepped up monitoring efforts to ensure smoother and safer journeys compared to last year.
