Fire at Jashore jute mill
A fire broke out at Roman Jute Mills Limited in the Urotola area of Prembagh Union under Abhaynagar upazila on Saturday afternoon, causing substantial damage to stored jute and factory property.
The incident occurred around 4:30 pm in the mill’s jute storage section.
Confirming the matter, Nawapara Fire Service Station Officer Shahidul Islam said that the flames spread quickly within the premises.
Two firefighting units rushed to the scene minutes after receiving the information and brought the blaze under control around 5:30 pm.
No casualties have so far been reported in this connection, he added.
Sohel Rana, in-charge of the mill’s electrical department, said the fire originated at the rear portion of the storage area and spread rapidly due to the presence of flammable materials.
General Manager Mirajul Islam said the exact extent of the damage has yet to be determined. However, preliminary estimates suggest that losses may amount to nearly Tk 1 crore, he said.
Station Officer Shahidul Islam said initial findings indicate that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit.
