Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the incidents of attack and conflict in various countries, including the Middle East, are sending a terrifying message to the world civilization.

He made the remarks while addressing a Doa Mahfil (prayer gathering) as the chief guest organised at the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) auditorium in Dhanmondi on Monday afternoon, commemorating the first death anniversary of Professor Dr Shahida Rafiq, an adviser to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Expressing deep concern, the BNP Secretary General said, "There is an extreme lack of morality in current global politics. Incidents like an attack on a sovereign country or the assassination of a head of state pose a threat to humanity. Those who believe in human values and democracy are extremely frustrated seeing such deterioration in the world situation. It is urgent for the global conscience to awaken to stop this conflict."

Fakhrul said, "We have a long way to go. We have to establish a welfare state and the rule of law".

"We are going through a difficult and turbulent time. The lack of morality in world politics is glaring. We are people who grew up within a democratic system, so we believe in human values and democracy. Despite the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, the fact that people are still not hesitant to make the right decision is a great mercy from Allah," he added.

Referring to the previous government, he added, "The fascist forces have destroyed all institutions of the country over the past 17-18 years. The education system has suffered the most damage during their time in power. Our main goal now is to lift educational institutions from this fragile state and establish good governance."

Recalling Dr. Shahida Rafiq, the BNP Secretary General said, "She was a patriot and an erudite woman through and through. The way she built educational institutions and worked for the welfare of the people, even in adversity, is an example for the present generation. She had the courage to call truth as truth and injustice as injustice."

He added, "We must move forward embracing the ideals of Dr Shahida Rafiq. All kinds of cooperation will be extended within the legal framework to advance the educational institution she founded."

Dr Md Shahpur Rafiq Mia, Chairman of the IST Board of Governors, presided over the event. The Vice-Chancellor of the National University Professor Dr. A S M Amanullah was present as a special guest.
