Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that extortionists and repeat offenders will be brought under the law through a systematic listing process, in a move aimed at strengthening law and order in the capital.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting with senior officials at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters on Wednesday.

“We will begin by preparing a list of extortionists, starting from Dhaka, and ensure they face legal action. In addition, a list of terrorists, habitual offenders, and those causing social disorder has been prepared,” he said.

The Home Minister emphasized that restoring public confidence and ensuring safety are the government’s top priorities.

“The police play a vital role in upholding the rule of law. Although the department faced setbacks under a previous regime, we are working to rebuild trust and ensure that the police can return to their historic role,” he added.

Salahuddin Ahmed stressed professionalism and institutional discipline within the police force.

“The police are genuinely the friends of the people. Past misconduct was not the fault of the institution but the result of a few individuals under a fascist regime. The chain of command will be strictly followed, and no arbitrary orders will be tolerated. The law will be enforced impartially,” he said.

On public safety, he noted, saying, “Our highest priority is to maintain peace and order, ensure the rule of law, and provide a sense of security to citizens.”

The minister also acknowledged equipment shortages within the police department and outlined steps to ensure a citizen-friendly approach.

“Professionalism must guide the chain of command. Lower-ranking officers will no longer bypass their superiors. At the same time, senior officials, including the Police Commissioner and IGP, may communicate directly when necessary,” he added.

Addressing traffic management, the Home Minister said a dedicated cell has been formed to tackle congestion in Dhaka.

“The proliferation of battery-operated rickshaws on major roads, including VIP routes, must be controlled. Starting today, the road from Uttara to the Secretariat will be monitored as a VIP route, with restricted vehicle movement. Similar measures will gradually be implemented on other roads,” he said.

He concluded by urging citizens to take responsibility for traffic discipline, emphasizing that coordinated efforts are needed to maintain order and public safety.
