2 suspected thieves lynched in Munshiganj

Two young men were beaten to death by locals on suspicion of theft in Munshiganj's Louhajang in the early hours of Tuesday, March 4.

The deceased were identified as Sagar, 30, son of Farhad Mia, and Sanarul, 30, son of Shahidul Islam, residents of Goalimandra in the upazila. They are members of the Bede community.

After receiving information that two individuals were stealing electric wires from Satgharia Community Clinic, locals confined the duo for several hours and gave them a good thrashing, according to witnesses.

Being informed, the police rescued the two men in an unconscious state in the morning and took them to Louhajang Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

The law enforcers detained four people from the scene for interrogation.

Locals said the number of thieves has increased recently in the area, and that is why the villagers have been guarding the village at night. When news spread that the electric wires of the government community clinic were being stolen, locals confined two on suspicion of being thieves and beat them up.

However, Md Firoz Kabir, additional superintendent of police (crime and operation), Munshiganj, said during the initial investigation, police found no evidence that the two men were caught red-handed while stealing electric wires.

A tense situation was created, accusing the victims of theft for their previous various activities, and they were beaten, resulting in their deaths, he added.
