TIB calls for cancellation of appointment of new BB governor
Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh, has called for the cancellation of the appointment of the new Bangladesh Bank governor to ensure the central bank’s independent, impartial, and conflict-of-interest-free functioning.
He made the statement on Thursday (March 5) during a press conference titled “Top Strategic Priorities for Implementing the Government’s Commitment to Good Governance and Anti-Corruption: TIB Recommendations” held at the TIB office in Dhanmondi.
On February 25, Mostaqur Rahman was appointed as the new governor of Bangladesh Bank, replacing economist Ahsan H. Mansur. Questions have been raised over whether Rahman’s business background could create a conflict of interest with his responsibilities as the head of the financial regulatory body.
Iftekharuzzaman said the appointment has raised concerns and emphasized that the governor of Bangladesh Bank should be someone with proven expertise and experience in the sector, and above all, capable of performing duties free from any conflict of interest.
He also advised the BNP to adopt a well-thought-out strategy to prevent forces opposed to the government’s success from gradually becoming unchallenged.
Besides Iftekharuzzaman, TIB Director Mohammad Tauhidul Islam and several others were present at the event.
Iftekharuzzaman further stressed the need to develop an integrated strategy and roadmap based on BNP’s 31-point state reform outline, its election manifesto, and the July charter.
