Minister threatens route permit cancellation for Eid time fare hike

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has warned that bus operators will face route permit cancellation if found charging extra fares from passengers during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

He, also the railway and shipping minister, said this after a meeting on the preparations to make the Eid journey safe and hassle-free held at the Road Transport and Highways Division at the Secretariat on Thursday, March 5.

When his attention was drawn to the fact that bus fares rise during every Eid, Minister Rabiul said, "There is no scope to charge extra fare. Inform us if anyone charges extra fares. We will give him exemplary punishment."

When asked what kind of action would be taken, he replied, "If any bus company charges extra fares, their route permit will be scrapped."

The minister also said transport owners attended the meeting and assured that they would not charge extra fares.
