Man kills wife and child, then takes his own life

A man allegedly stabbed his wife and infant daughter to death before taking his own life in Atrai upazila of Naogaon district early Friday, March 6.

The deceased were identified as Joy Sarkar, 27, son of Gautam Sarkar of the village, his wife Bristi Sarkar, 22, and their 27-month-old daughter Jini Sarkar.

According to police and local sources, Joy was reportedly addicted to drugs and often had disputes with his wife over the issue. Family members said that Bristi had previously left the house several times due to his behaviour.

After dinner on Thursday night, when the family members were asleep, Joy allegedly attacked his wife and daughter with a knife, leaving Bristi dead on the spot.

Family members later rescued the critically injured Joy and his daughter from the spot and took them to the Atrai Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors referred them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as their health conditions deteriorated.

Joy and his daughter, at one point, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Confirming the matter, Atrai Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Karim said that preliminary findings suggest that family disputes and drug addiction might have triggered the incident.

The bodies would be handed over to relatives after completion of legal procedures, he added.
