2 youths held with fake notes in Dhaka
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two young men along with a large quantity of counterfeit currency and printing equipment from Dhaka's Turag area on Thursday night, March 5.
The arrested were identified as Naimul Islam Ishan, 19, and Kefayet Ullah, 19.
Confirming the matter on Friday, March 6, RAB-3 Senior Assistant Director Sanad Barua said that a team of RAB, acting on a tip off, conducted a drive in the fourth floor of a building, owned by Hosne Ara Akter, and arrested the duo.
RAB officials recovered 5,005 counterfeit 500-taka notes from their possessions.
They also seized a laptop, two laser printing dies, a printer, and three smartphones, all reportedly used in producing fake notes during the raid, the RAB official said.
During initial questioning, the men admitted to being members of an organised counterfeit currency syndicate. They reportedly produced fake notes of various denominations over an extended period and circulated them in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
Sanad Barua added that the suspects kept the counterfeit notes intending to sell them as genuine currency, despite knowing they were fake.
Operations against the counterfeit currency network will continue nationwide, he added.
