Two children go missing in Kushtia river

Two children went missing while bathing in the Gorai River near the Khoksa-Osmanpur ferry ghat in Kushtia on Saturday afternoon.

According to locals, four children went to bathe in the river, but strong currents swept two of them into deeper waters. Two children, Samiya, 6, and Sumaya, 8, were rescued alive by local boatmen, while Taifa, 7, daughter of Faruk, and Suraiya, 8, daughter of Sohel, remain missing.

The rescued child, Samiya, said that all four children went to bathe in the river together. While swimming in the middle of the river, the strong current swept two of them away, despite their attempts to reach the shore.

Raushan Ali, leader of the Khoksa Fire Brigade and Civil Defence Unit, said that a diving team from Khulna was expected to arrive by 8:00pm to lead the main rescue operation.

The operation would continue with proper lighting once the diving team arrives, he added.
