Man hacked to death in Madaripur over dominance
A 55-year-old man was hacked to death allegedly by his rivals over establishing supremacy at Naya Madaripur village of sadar upazila in Madaripur on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hawlader, a resident of the same village in the upazila.
Quoting locals, Madaripur police station officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said that there had been a longstanding dispute between Maniruzzaman Akter Hawlader and Hasan Munshi over the issue.
The dispute had previously escalated last year when supporters of Akhtar Hawlader killed Shakil Munsi, president of the Sadar upazila unit Sramik Dal, intensifying tensions between the two groups.
On Tuesday morning, supporters of both factions engaged in a clash with lethal weapons, leaving Alamgir Hawladar, a cousin of Akhtar Hawlader dead on the spot.
The OC said that one of the hands of Alamgir was reportedly severed during the attack.
On information, a team of police and army personnel rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control using tear gas.
Police, however, arrested Masud Bepari for his alleged involvement in the incident, the OC said, adding that additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any kind of unwanted situation.
