Govt appoints administrators to 5 more city corporations
The government has appointed administrators to five more city corporations across the country, according to a notification issued by the Local Government Division on Saturday.
Full-time administrators have been appointed to Barisal City Corporation, Rajshahi City Corporation, Mymensingh City Corporation, Rangpur City Corporation and Comilla City Corporation.
According to the notification, Bilkis Akhter Jahan Shirin has been appointed administrator of Barisal City Corporation, Md Mahfuzur Rahman of Rajshahi City Corporation, and Md Rukunozzaman Rokon of Mymensingh City Corporation.
In addition, Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury has been appointed administrator of Rangpur City Corporation, while Md Yusuf Mollah will serve as administrator of Cumilla City Corporation.
Officials said those appointed are known as local leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The notification said the appointments were made under Section 25A (1) of the Local Government (City Corporations) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024.
It added that under Section 25A (3) of the ordinance, the administrators will exercise the powers and perform the duties of the mayor of the respective city corporations and will receive allowances as per existing rules.
Earlier, on February 22, the government appointed administrators to six other city corporations, including two in Dhaka. In those appointments as well, political figures were chosen instead of career bureaucrats, signalling a continuation of the same approach in local government administration.
