Ahead of the joyous festival of Eid al-Fitr, the government has extended a gesture of appreciation to thousands of sanitation workers who keep the country’s cities clean throughout the year.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced an Eid gift of Tk 5,000 for each cleaner working in the country’s 12 city corporations. The financial assistance is intended to recognise the contribution of sanitation workers and help bring a little extra joy to their families during the festive season.

The prime minister formally handed over the cheques to the mayors and administrators of the city corporations at his office in the Parliament Secretariat on Sunday afternoon.

Among those present at the programme were Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, and Shahadat Hossain, mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, along with senior government officials.

According to the prime minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, the Eid assistance has been provided as a token of respect and solidarity with sanitation workers, whose daily efforts ensure that urban life continues smoothly.

He noted that cleaners perform a vital but often overlooked role in keeping cities healthy, clean and livable. The prime minister’s initiative, he said, is meant to acknowledge their tireless service and the importance of their work.

Ruman expressed hope that the financial support would bring added happiness to the families of sanitation workers during Eid. He also said the government plans to continue humanitarian and welfare initiatives to improve the well-being of those engaged in essential urban services.
