Youth shot dead near central Shaheed Minar
A young man was shot dead near the Central Shaheed Minar area of the capital on Sunday night. The victim has been identified as Rakibul Islam, 27.
According to sources, a young man suddenly opened fire and shot four rounds in public at the Central Shaheed Minar around 9:30pm. During the incident, Rakibul was seriously injured. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. He died around 10:30pm while undergoing treatment at the hospital’s One Stop Emergency Centre.
The death was confirmed by Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at the hospital.
Meanwhile, one person allegedly involved in the incident was caught by passersby and handed over to the proctorial team of the University of Dhaka. The proctorial team later handed him over to the police.
Proctor of the University of Dhaka, Saifuddin Ahmed, said members of the proctorial team rushed to the scene immediately after the shooting and detained one person before handing him over to the police. He added that Shahbagh Police Station is currently investigating the matter.
Speaking to Jago News, he said that none of those involved are affiliated with the University of Dhaka and that both individuals are outsiders.
Sub-Inspector Md Mithu Fakir of Shahbagh Police Station said that Rakibul was shot and also attacked with a sharp weapon at the Shaheed Minar. People present at the scene detained one young man immediately after the incident.
He added that Rakibul sustained a gunshot wound to the head and had injuries from sharp weapons on different parts of his body. The incident is currently under investigation.
