PM orders aid for hailstorm, flash flood victims during Eid holidays
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to extend support to people affected by recent hailstorms and flash floods across the country, even as the Eid holidays continue.
The instruction came during a cabinet meeting held at the Cabinet Division on Tuesday, March 17, with the prime minister in the chair.
Briefing reporters afterwards, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani said the issue of recent weather-related damage was discussed outside the formal agenda.
“There have already been hailstorms in the northern region and flash floods in the northeast,” he said. “The Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief have been instructed to work together to address the situation.”
According to the Cabinet Secretary, support packages have been prepared during the holiday period, with district administrations tasked with distributing them among affected people.
“Deputy commissioners have been asked to deliver the assistance packages to those in need and arrange any additional support required,” he said.
Officials from the agriculture and disaster management ministries will remain on duty throughout the holidays to coordinate relief efforts and assess further, if needed.
Nasimul Gani also noted that deputy commissioners have been authorised to utilise available local funds to respond quickly to the situation and ease public suffering.
