July warriors unveil ‘National Citizen Party’ ahead of Friday launch

A new political force, the National Citizen Party (NCP), will debut Friday, born from a collaboration between the National Citizen Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The announcement emerged from a joint meeting held Thursday, February 27, at the National Citizen Committee’s central office in Bangla Motor, Dhaka, running from noon into the afternoon.

Key leadership roles were cemented during the session: Nahid Islam as convener and Akhtar Hossain as member secretary of the NCP, said insiders.

Nasiruddin Patwari, current convener of the National Citizen Committee, will serve as chief coordinator, with Hasnat Abdullah as chief organiser for the southern region and Sarjis Alam for the northern region. Two leaders present at the meeting confirmed these appointments to reporters.

Later that evening, Akhtar Hossain took to Facebook, posting simply: “Jatiya Nagarik Party, National Citizen Party (NCP).”

Other positions within the party remain undecided but are expected to be finalised by Thursday night, according to meeting sources. The group also emphasised maintaining order at Friday’s public events, tasking organizers with strict oversight.

The NCP’s launch marks a bold step by activists tied to the July protests, signalling their shift from street movements to structured politics.
