NRC demands US compensation, probe into India’s fascist enabling role
The National Revolutionary Council (NRC) has called for the United States to compensate victims of oppression under the Awami League, welcoming former US Deputy Ambassador Jon F Danilowicz’s admission of America’s missteps during the 2007-2008 military-backed caretaker government, known as 1/11.
The NRC also demanded formation of a commission to investigate India’s role in enabling 16 years of “fascist rule” by the Awami League, including the July 2024 massacre.
In a joint statement issued Sunday night, NRC political chief Anisur Rahman and member secretary Hasan Mohammad Arif argued that US acknowledgment of its role in supporting the December 29, 2008, elections—allegedly rigged with India’s mediation—requires more than words.
“The US must take responsibility for the oppression inflicted by the Awami League and provide compensation and rehabilitation to the oppressed,” the statement read.
The statement accused India of orchestrating the Awami League’s rise and sustaining its authoritarian grip, citing the 2009 BDR massacre of 57 army officers, the execution of opposition leaders in staged trials, mass shootings during protests—such as the killing of over 200 people in a day over Maulana Sayedee’s verdict—and the July 2024 crackdown.
“India openly backed these atrocities, abducted Bangladeshi citizens, and looted billions, exploiting agreements like those in Assam,” it alleged, urging a commission to assess India’s actions and hold it accountable for good neighbourly relations.
The NRC referenced Danilowicz’s remarks from a Saturday discussion in Dhaka, where he criticised the US for pressuring hasty elections post-1/11, aligning with the military-Awami League nexus that undermined democracy.
While the interim government has remained silent on pursuing justice against India, the NRC insisted, “The people remember.”
