BNP infighting leaves 1 dead, 20 injured in Rangpur
A deadly clash between two rival factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) over a business establishment in Badarganj, Rangpur, left one person dead and at least 20 others injured on Saturday (April 5).
The violence erupted near the Badarganj Central Shaheed Minar around noon, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The deceased was identified as Lavlu Mia, 50, a local resident and an active political worker affiliated with the BNP. He succumbed to his injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital at approximately 4:45pm while undergoing treatment.
Badarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Atiqur Rahman confirmed the incident, stating that Lavlu Mia and other injured individuals were admitted to the hospital following the violent confrontation.
Four of the injured, including Lavlu, were reported to be in critical condition. Nine seriously wounded individuals were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, while others received primary care at the Badarganj Upazila Health Complex.
The violence erupted around 11:30 am when tensions flared between two rival BNP groups led by former MP and Upazila BNP member Mohammad Ali Sarkar, and Shahidul Haque Manik, former joint secretary of the Upazila BNP and chairman of 13 Kalupara Union. The dispute centred on a shop rent issue, which spiralled into an hour-long clash marked by chases between the two sides.
"The situation is now under control. Investigations are ongoing, and legal action will be taken based on evidence and complaints," the OC added.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the clash began near the Shaheed Minar area, escalating rapidly as both factions resorted to violence. The altercation resulted in widespread chaos, with at least 20 people injured, some critically.
In the wake of the violence, Rangpur District BNP leadership took swift administrative action. Convener Saiful Islam and Member Secretary Anisur Rahman Laku issued show-cause notices to the two faction leaders—Mohammad Ali Sarkar and Shahidul Haque Manik—as well as Badarganj Upazila BNP Senior Joint Convener Humayun Kabir Manik.
The three leaders have been charged with encroachment, deteriorating law and order, and violating party discipline. They have been asked to appear in person and submit a written reply within 72 hours.
