Tarique, Zubaida acquitted from jail terms in graft case
The High Court (HC) has acquitted BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman from jail sentences of nine and three years respectively in a graft case.
The single bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman delivered the verdict accepting an appeal filed by Zubaida against her three-year jail sentence handed down by the lower court.
Earlier on Monday, May 26, the same HC bench fixed today (May 28) to pronounce its verdict on the appeal.
On August 2, 2023, Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court sentenced Tarique to nine years and Zubaida to three years in jail respectively in the graft case.
The court ordered to confiscate Tk 2.74 crore as undisclosed asset of Tarique and Zubaida in favor of the state.
On September 26 of 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Tarique, Zubaida and his mother-in-law Iqbal Mand Banu for allegedly amassing illegal wealth of around Tk 4.81 crore and concealing information about the asset.
